Any large bore mouthpiece is a better match for a Selmer "Centered Tone" than Selmer C85 Series mouthpiece.The barrel is slightly shaped/curved like J-Lo (narrower at top, wider towards the bottom). Wood throughout the clarinet is straight grained, glass-smooth inside and out. The bell is ringless and has a thumb-wide smoothly-notched groove around the inside (just under where the LJ tenon slips in). All cork was in shape and well-fitted.Author: Richie Hawley. I have a Selmer A clarinet with a 3xxx serial #--"Brevete SGDG" stamped on the top joint--means patent pending, more or less--and made in the 1930s or so. Great sound, wood in good shape--BUT the ring keys on both joints are totally worn, makes playing a chore, and it's become clear that getting spare parts is hopeless.The tuning on this instrument is excellent, and can blend very well. The clarinet is very in tune in the clarion and altimisso register, and as others have noted before, thrives in this upper range. It does run a hair sharp in the lower clarion register most notably A and G, but low E is in tune.The "sounding' notes are also called "concert" pitches. So if your conductor asks you to sound a tuning note concert Bb, you would need to play a C on your Bb clarinet. In orchestra, to sound the concert tuning pitch A, you would need to play B on your Bb clarinet. Hope this helps clear up the mystery a bit. Post Edited (2004-08-19 00:46)
