Go 10mm all the way because penetration is king, most of the guys I hunt with or hang around carry a 10mm for bears. I have one friend that took a bear in self defense a couple years ago and he used a 41mag and that bear was stopped on the spot at just a few yards away. A G20 or a G40 with fifteen rounds of 200gr double tap hard cast bullets would give you a good performance on a charging bear. 41 mag and 44's only have 6 rounds if you are unloading a gun I much prefer the 15 to the 6.While the 9mm can achieve similar effects as the .40 S&W, it's with premium ammo that costs significantly more than your baseline 9mm ammunition.
