Dec 13, 2006 · It is the forward most spark plug closest to the radiator. Next check the distributor rotor button, it should be aligned to fire #1 spark plug. That should be the plug wire to #1 spark plug. Now conect the remaining plugs to fire in the order 1-2-4-3. Then re install everything and start your engine.

First, if you are sure your firing order is correct--1243 CCW and you have good spark plug wires (copper core) and new Autolite 437 plugs gapped correctly at .025....then I would say you need to look at this as a distributor related problem. The more info you can give, the easier it will be to diagnose the problem. Tim.The firing order is 1243, #1 being at the front of the tractor. Your father-in-law is correct about backfire, and it is most likely what you were hearing with the timing 180 degrees out on the distributor. Backfire is firing through the carburetor. Firing order on the 5-nipple sidemount distributor is 1,2,4,3 CCW. And timing is 4*BTDC. And yes, the timing mark is accessed under that tear-drop shaped cover. And yes, the 20*mark is BTDC.
